November 2025 to April 2026
Wunderbriefs started in 2019 by the Canadian Academy of Mask and Puppetry (CAMP) with the intention of creating opportunities for artists to develop small-scale puppet shows. Since then, four to six Wunderbriefs artists have presented their fascinating miniature puppets at the Festival of Animated Objects. Each time, these tiny creations amaze audiences with their storytelling, creativity, craftsmanship, and the versatility of their mediums and techniques. This is what makes these tiny wonders… wonderful!
The miniature puppet theatre in Calgary originated in 2011 with Kyle Hinton and Janessa Johnsrude through a summer internship program at the Calgary Animated Objects Society. Since then, this art form has grown throughout the city, with more puppeteers experimenting with and expanding the format.
For artists, the Wunderbriefs provide a space to explore their creativity with freedom, develop themes close to their hearts, and experience first-hand how their work resonates with the viewers. Witnessing both their own growth and that of their peers has been an invaluable shared experience that brings people together. The program fosters community building through opportunities to collaborate, exchange with peers and professionals, and learn from one another, which has been a highlight for many Participants.
The artworks in these galleries not only showcase fragments of these tiny puppet shows but also offer a window into the artists’ worlds. They provide a glimpse into their artistic practices, imaginative processes, and the fantastical stories that puppetry brings to life. Peek into these worlds and be ready to ask: What might come out of that suitcase?
About the Festival of Animated Objects
The International Festival of Animated Objects Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting mask & puppet related performance. As an incubator and producer of mask, puppetry, and animated objects we are the primary curator and presenter of local, national and international puppetry. We strive to provide Alberta audiences with the chance to experience the breadth and diversity of these innovative art forms. Vital to the development of puppetry as an art form, the festival not only provides a stage for Alberta creators to showcase their work but is also a forum for an international exchange of ideas providing learning opportunities for professional and emerging artists and the public at large to find expression through animated objects.
These eight galleries provide unique exhibition opportunities for community-driven exhibitions, and feature the work of emerging artists and curators. Located on the west end of the +15 walkway between City Hall and the Glenbow Museum, the +15 Galleries are always open and always free.
