Derek Haussecker
Fluid Static

April - June 2026

Derek Haussecker is an interdisciplinary artist and musician from Calgary/Mohkinstiss. His work often explores the relationships between sounds, form, movement, and the body’s relationship as a tool in the creation and perception of artwork. As a percussionist he investigates the motions and patterns involved in creating artwork and sound. Focusing not only on the act of mark making or percussive contact, but the corporeal movements in the moments between and during connection with a surface. This close attention and curation of motion fills his work with a sense of dynamic rhythm within the composition that engages the viewer/listener in a vibrant scene of balanced choreography of form. In creating physical or audio work, he adopts a process of experimentation and revisitation to make images, sounds and objects. Working in a variety of mediums including paint, audio installation, video, sculpture and performance.

Fluid Static is a multi-channel audio piece that investigates somatic sonic perception and the bodily experience of sound. This repetitive and slowly building audio accumulates throughout the room until it fills the air and creates a thick, rich textural landscape, which then slowly dissolves and builds back up again. As one navigates the space, the sounds emerge as a deep percussive knocking, to popping gurgling or crunching, shifting into what seems like rain and textural television static. Created by altering and layering a single audio recording nearly 40 times. This work serves to explore somaesthetic relationships to sound and the potential to elicit physical sensations and perceptions of space through the use of sound. Through expanding the sonic range of a simple contact-mic recording of a glass jar filled with ice cubes and water, the audience is invited to experience how our bodies are used as extended listening tools. Not only in the movement through a space in relation to the audio but through the physical sensations produced in reaction to sound.
