Deep Six for Tchaikovsky's Sixth
What you might not know about the composer's final piece.
Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Oct 24, 2026, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra
“I absolutely consider it to be the best, and in particular, the most sincere of all my creations,” said Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovksy of his Sixth Symphony. “I love it as I have never loved any of my other musical offspring... without exaggeration, I have put my whole soul into this symphony.”
For those hoping to experience the piece live, Tchaikovsky's Sixth: The Final Symphony takes place November 6 + 7 with returning Principal Guest Conductor Karen Kamensek, guest vocalists, and your Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra + Chorus. The evening program also includes Arvo Pärt Fratres and Ralph Vaughan Williams Dona Nobis Pacem.

In anticipation for The Final Symphony, let’s dive deeper into Symphony No. 6:
1. Rumoured Requiem
Tchaikovsky died only nine days after Symphony No. 6 premiered; thus, the two events have been inextricably linked. Rumours have since swirled about the circumstances surrounding the composer's death, and whether he consciously intended Symphony No. 6 to serve as his final message.
2. Dizzying Dedication
3. Unexpected Ending
4. What’s In a Name?
5. Limping Waltz
6. Always Leave Them Guessing
See Tchaikovsky's Sixth: The Final Symphony at the Jack Singer Concert Hall on November 6 & 7, 2026. Tickets available now.
