“Art reflects life,” and life offers many challenges, opportunities - and interruptions! Even the work of history’s most prolific composers was directly shaped by the events of their lives: from Prokofiev navigating government censorship to Debussy and Ravel battling failing health, and lesser-known Lili Boulanger, whose brilliant career was tragically cut short at age 24. Yet, their music continues to inspire us today!
Genius Interrupted celebrates this resilience, pairing their timeless masterworks with a local world premiere by Arthur Bachmann, commissioned for The Civic’s 50th anniversary. Featuring our very own virtuoso pianist Thomas Yu alongside conductor Rolf Bertsch, this performance promises a uniquely profound afternoon of music-making.
