ARTIST STATEMENT:

I find peace in non-artificial nature. Nature, which emits various lights in space and tries to change by wearing new clothes, always captivates my mind. Nature seems complicated but harmonious; it changes but always goes back to the beginning. I put cold air, warm light, and wind movements in my paintings. Everything I see, everything I've experienced, becomes the subject of my paintings. Writing about human life and healing in nature, I mainly capture the coexistence of humans and nature on my canvas. I want viewers to stop interpreting while in front of my works and be calm while just looking. The primary medium is oil and acrylic paints. I use perspective and paint with realistic representation techniques so that the observer feels like they are in the field.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:

Kyung Eun 'Kay' Heo, from South Korea, is a writer with eight years of experience and a visual artist specializing in oil painting for the past six years. As a writer, she has mainly explored ethnic groups' diasporas and reunification, conflict and resolution, and the coexistence of differences. She is particularly curious about unfamiliar worlds, and her quest to understand them is reflected in her books: travel essay (2014) and a collection of testimonies on North Korean human rights (2015). She first started learning painting in 2016 in Seoul. A long-time writer and journalist, she gained energy and sanctuary in art. She mainly paints nature and travel, which brings her peace of mind. She revealed her artwork for the first time through a group exhibition in 2019 in Seoul. After moving to Canada in 2021, she has worked as a visual artist for several art organizations based in Calgary.
