Maria Fernanda Munar
Artist Biography
Maria Fernanda Munar is a Canadian-Colombian visual and media artist working at the intersection of photography, sculpture, and animation. Her sculptural-collage practice transforms photographic fragments into multidimensional forms that explore diaspora, resilience, and the interconnectedness between humanity and nature. Often drawing parallels between botanical forms and the human body, her work examines how identity is shaped, fractured, and reimagined.
A graduate of Alberta University of the Arts in Media Arts, Maria has exhibited at the Banff Centre, Gibson Fine Art, Werklund Centre, and EMMEDIA, with work held in both private and public collections. She has received support from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and participated in residencies in Calgary, Colombia, and Latvia.
Her practice now includes stop-motion and traditional animation, expanding her sculptural collages into immersive moving image works. She also leads workshops in collage and animation and works as an Associate Motion Director, deepening her engagement with movement and transformation.
