Federico Airaudo
Artist Biography
Federico Airaudo is an Ecuadorian artist and newcomer to Calgary. Often described as a Latin American “Where’s Waldo”, his ultra-bright paintings are brimming with human-animal characters, satirical humour, and winding storylines. Federico’s jam-packed visual scenarios follow a busy constellation of intersecting characters that animate ordinary life and the distinct cultural mannerisms of various regions of Ecuador. Central to Federico’s work is an improvisational exploration of the concept of “species” through artmaking, provoking questions and dialogue about what it means to be human. Paying attention to layers of animality in Ecuador as an active presence rather than a passive backdrop to human activity, Federico’s work playfully leans into the symbolic tensions of human-animal exchanges in increasingly commercialized urban scenes—full with ironies and contradictions.
