YAMATO TAMAYURA: Echoes of the Soul

Written by Werklund Centre | Jun 2, 2026 3:00:00 PM

The relentlessly powerful, athletic, and loud YAMATO, DRUMMERS OF JAPAN are back in Calgary with their newest performance, TAMAYURA: Echoes of the Soul. Combining traditional Wadaiko drumming with world-class theatrical showmanship, a YAMATO show is something you need to feel to believe. Each performance features over 40 drums on stage, including the enormous 500 kg “Odaiko,” carved from a 400-year-old tree.

Roughly translating to "a brief moment in time," TAMAYURA invites us to come together for a powerful moment of music and cultural immersion at Werklund Centre as the incredible YAMATO, DRUMMERS OF JAPAN share their stunning athletic prowess, shaking the walls of the Jack Singer Concert Hall.

YAMATO was founded by Masa Ogawa in 1993 in Nara, “the land of Yamato”, which is said to be the birthplace of Japanese culture. Now based in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, performers adhere to a rigorous daily training schedule that rivals world-class athletes to reach performance-level precision on their worldwide tours.
